YMTA supports the Yukon Workers' Compensation Board (YWCB) with the implementation of their Yukon Prevention Strategy that aims to see workplaces:
- which are safe and healthy
- where injured workers return to work safely
- where workers and employers share responsibility for safety, wellness and managing the impact of workplace injuries and illness
- where strong and effective relationships and partnerships exist; and
- where employers, workers and the Board are accountable for safety.
YMTA is implementing the Yukon Mine Safety Initiative which is:
- To develop/purchase and modify standardized safety training modules to deliver industry-wide
- To communicate messages on the importance of safety training, prevention of incidents, injuries and illness.
In 2009 YMTA is funding:
Klondike Placer Miners’ Association (KPMA) Placer Mining Safety Program
Crane Operator Certification
As of July 1, 2009 a regulation requiring crane operators to meet specific training requirements and demonstrate competency in the operation of mobile and articulating boom cranes came into effect in Yukon. The YMTA is working with Klondike Placer Miners’ Association (KPMA) to deliver Crane Certification Training to Placer Miners, Yukon residents and First Nations.
First Line Supervisor Training
YMTA has in consultation with Industry and YWCB has developed a generic certification program for first line supervisors in the mining and resource-related industries. Supervisor training is essential to the management of a safe work place
.
Safety Guidelines for Mineral Exploration in Yukon Handbook
This handbook has been developed based on the AMEBC Exploration Guidelines and it includes Chapters on: Personal Work Methods & Protection; Clothing, Tools & Equipment; Health, Allergies & First Aid; Camp Management; Fire Hazards, Firearms, Explosives & Lightning; Travel & Transportation; Wild Animals; Survival; Underground Workings Drilling Rigs & Trenching. The handbook comes in a compact, easy-to-use, format and can be easily thrown in with your field gear for quick reference. This is a must-have for all exploration employees out in the field and it is currently available to be picked-up at YWCB or YMTA offices.
