Aboriginal Liaison Standards Development
YMTA is working with Yukon First Nations to develop occupational standards for Aboriginal Liaison Officers working in the Yukon.
Emergency Response Training
YMTA delivered a 3-day Emergency Response Training course in Whitehorse through the Care Institute.
Fuel Spill Prevention and Response
YMTA delivered a one-day Fuel Spill Prevention and Response course in Whitehorse through Counterspil Research. This course covers legislation, emergency response planning, and preventing and responding to spills.
Programs for Youth
YMTA is working with Little Salmon/Carmacks First Nation to deliver a gemology field course to youth and adults in Carmacks.
Marine Emergency Duties (M.E.D.) A-2
YMTA has contributed funds to Reimer Contracting to deliver the M.E.D. A-2 course in Dawson. This training will enable participants to operate and work on the barges that run in the lower Yukon River supplying placer mines and hard rock exploration.
Skills Canada
YMTA has provided Skills Canada with a $25,000 contribution agreement to assist in the delivery of the Yukon Skills Competition. Building awareness of and development of all skills is essential to the successful of the mining industry in the Yukon.
Mineral Processing Sherwood
YMTA is working with Yukon College, Jim Pirie and Associates, Worker’s Compensation Health and Safety Board (WCB) to develop and deliver a mineral processing technician course at the Minto Mine. The opening of the first mill in the Yukon in over 10 years affords Yukoners with a unique opportunity to gain the necessary skills to work within the mill and advance their career into higher function mill technician positions.
Heavy Equipment Operator
YMTA is currently working with Pelly Construction and EKPass to develop a certified heavy equipment operator pilot project. If successful, this program will be expanded across the Yukon. There is a high demand for skilled heavy equipment operators in the Yukon and surrounding area. Ensuring these operators are certified provides the trainees with necessary credentials to open up career opportunities within and outside the Yukon.
Frontline Supervisor
YMTA is working with Jim Pirie and Associates, industry and Worker’s Compensation Health and Safety Board (WCB) to deliver a localized safety program for front line supervisors in the mining industry. Intended to be ready for delivery this year, YMTA is working to modify the program to meet necessary core competencies in the Yukon. Supervisor training is essential to the management of a safe work place.
BEAHR
YMTA is working with Yukon College, Rem Ricks and Aurora College to deliver Building Environmental Aboriginal Human Resources (BEAHR) Environmental Monitoring Program this spring. Registration notices will be posted soon and the costs will be subsidized by YMTA and industry.
Northwest Community College
YMTA is working with Yukon College to deliver the School of Exploration and Mining's Reclamation and Prospecting Program. Targeted to First Nation youth, this program is delivered in the bush and provides skills to work in the fields of reclamation and prospecting. Registration will be posted soon.
BCIT
YMTA is working to deliver a Comprehensive Mineral Exploration Association certification from BCIT this spring and summer. Beginning with introduction to the industry, the program will take students through to certification to work in the field of mineral exploration, this summer. Registration will be posted soon.
