Training/Education

There are many ways to prepare for a career in the mining industry.

Entry Level Careers

These careers require little or no previous experience. On-the-job training is usually provided. You must be able to read and write and some require that you have your Grade 10, 11 or 12.

Skilled Careers

These careers require that you complete specific training, licensing or certification at private schools, colleges, universities and/or mine sites.

Technical Careers

These careers require a college certificate or diploma. Generally, these are one- to three-year programs.

Trades Careers

These careers generally require that you be a certified journeyperson. To do so, you must either complete a three- to four-year apprenticeship program that includes on-the-job learning, classroom/shop training and an exam OR have 4.5 to 6 years of experience in your trade to pass the same exam.

University Level Careers

These careers require that you have a four-year bachelor’s university degree. Master’s level degrees generally take an additional two years.
